Health & Medical Positions and Views
Health & Medical Care, a General Statement Ensuring access to effective and affordable health care is one of the greatest challenges facing the health profession, insurers, and local, state and federal governments. The burden that high insurance and medical costs places on working families and seniors with fixed incomes needs to be addressed. In the 110th Congress, we must take steps to make health care more affordable, cover the uninsured and strengthen the safety net for those who fall through the cracks. As a cancer survivor, I know how important affordable, quality care is to Idaho families. Congress must take a number of steps to address this issue including promoting prevention and wellness, modernizing federal tax rules for health coverage, encouraging states to design health solutions for their citizens, and improving access to information on the price and quality of health services. While the government can play a role in providing and regulating health care, ultimately both consumers and providers should be free from excessive government interference with their health care choices. Instead of giving the government more power over health care, individual patients must be given more control, choice, and information to make their health care decisions. When individual patients have these choices, they will reward innovative providers and insurers who reduce costs and improve quality. Promoting quality care for all citizens must remain a priority of the 110th Congress. Please know that I will continue to work with my Senate colleagues to reform our system of health care so that all Idahoans can receive the care they need.

Children's Health Child Nutrition As a father of five, I understand the positive effects that good nutrition has in helping a child develop and remain alert throughout the course of a school day. The Child Nutrition Act, originally passed by Congress in 1966, authorizes a number of programs including the National School Lunch Program. S. 2507, the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, was passed by the Senate on June 23, 2004, and signed into law by President Bush on June 30, 2004. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I am pleased to have contributed to the creation of this law intended to end hunger for low-income children throughout the nation. I will work to ensure child nutrition programs receive the funding they deserve, so that Idaho children will continue to benefit.

Elderly's Health I recognize and am concerned about the financial and emotional strain that long-term care places on families. The number of elderly Americans is steadily rising. As our nation's elderly population increases, chronic illnesses will also rise. The increase of Americans with chronic illnesses will elevate the need for long-term care. Congress will continue to explore options that make this care possible without bankrupting families. As the Senate addresses this issue, I will work to ensure that long-term care is within reach of all citizens that require it.
